The Bahamas to Puerto Rico

Ships log: January 28, 2024, 01:22 N 23° 35.60′ W  75° 30.65′ TWS 9.9 TWD 188 AWS 8.5 SOG 8.2 It’s sunny, we’re flying over smooth seas, and the captain is happy.

It’s hard to believe our worst passage to date was our previous one. Sailing from Cape Canaveral to The Berries in 30 knots is a distant memory, and it’s a good thing it is because I do not want to feel that seasick again anytime soon. Oy vey, the gulf-stream!

We came to the Bahamas to rest and contemplate our future. We bounced our thoughts off Zachary when he visited earlier this month, and now we have a plan that we’re excited about.

Seven hundred islands surrounded by the most beautiful, crystal clear sea make the Bahamas unique. Don’t laugh, but I loved how Gerty’s cushions matched the color of the water.

It was a little hard to immerse ourselves in the culture because from what we understand, most of the population lives in Nassau and the bigger islands and we spent much of our time there in The Exumas. That said, Christmas lunch with Elvis was not to be missed, nor were the local conch salads and burgers. Plus, the freshly baked coconut breads were irresistible. To be sure, what we enjoyed most about our time in The Bahamas was sharing the sailing, hikes, snorkeling, iguanas, sting rays, OBGYN practice tests, turtles, 3-2-1 cakes, and melted ice-cream sandwiches with our guests, Zachary, John, and Elaine.

The kiteboarding was pretty awesome, too, and I think we’ve corrupted Zachary as he stayed out for hours practicing the wind window.

Adiós Bahamas. Puerto Rico, here we come!

Last remarks:

  • Thank you to my sister, Bonnie, who cared for me when I flew to Florida for carpal tunnel surgery. I don’t think we were supposed to have so much fun, but we sure did!
  • Thank you to Michael for working so hard while I was gone to increase the efficiency of our batteries by reconfiguring the wiring AND for taking me sailing.
  • Thanks to our new friends Paul & Christine on SV Grit, Wendy & Scott on SV Triple S, Jason & Lara on SV Tahina and all the other kind folk who kept us company in Georgetown.
  • Special thanks to Jennifer & John on SV Lady J and your friends for bringing my beloved crockpot back to me:)
