Newport with Love

Dear Newport,

You gave us your best, and we gave you our toilet again. My sincerest apologies.

I remember your glorious dumpster, mere feet from the dinghy dock and adjacent to the maritime center where we did our laundry—so convenient. But I’ll also remember the rest. I promise. I pinky swear.

I close my eyes, and see waves crashing against your cliffs. Todd, Liz, and the kids are there. We are walking and talking for miles as the ocean sprays our faces.

Then, I feel the warmth of our friends’ hugs on Thames Street. I laugh as all six of us pile into the dinghy, ready and willing to sleep six on Gerty for the first time. I smell shish kabobs on the grill, and I hear Jimmy Buffet sing. I feel the wind tangle my crazy hair as we lox out on the trampolines. There are sun-drenched smiles everywhere I look.

I talk with my mouth full at dinner with Michael, Dad, and Janet because there’s so much to say. We’re standing near the grass court at The Tennis Hall of Fame. We’re with Aunt Suzy, Uncle Steve, Meghan, Sue, and Phil. Then we’re sailing, and they’re taking turns at the tiller.

Michael and I are at the dock, theorizing about Hurricane Lee, stewing in the Atlantic. We’re in the harbor, bobbing and chatting with the others. There are so many sailors passing through.

When I open my eyes, I’m standing in the bathroom doorway. The head is absent, of course. I see the occluded anti-siphon vent Michael sealed off to stop critters from getting in the boat. I hate critters. There are many holes, too—an old raw water inlet, an outlet, and one Michael named “the phantom hole.” The room is off-limits now. No trespassing for me.

So I close the door and go on deck to watch the races. Then I stare at the beautiful Sophia. The sun is setting on her polished hull. She must be yours, Newport, because she never sails away like the others. She lounges on her mooring—pristine, glorious, and loyal to you. Sophia would never leave a toilet in your dumpster. She’s too divine. Yet, I can’t help but wonder if she wants to break free of her lines.

Regards,

Jill

First Mate, SV Gerty
