Saturday Work
Note to self: work less, sail more.
I arrive at Gerty late in the day after Saturday clinic, but what a day it is! Light south wind, perfect for a sunset sail with our gennaker, nicknamed “Happy Sail.” I hang over the rear pulpit watching the jellyfish go by. The conversation is intriguing as my Captain has spent much of the day unsuccessfully installing a switch. This may sound trite to you, but currently to turn on our hot water heater you have to do an array of boat yoga moves. Crouch legs, twist middle, balance, reach across, twist neck, balance, swivel butt, stretch fingers, balance and finally flick. Then the whole thing in reverse, just to get to the lever behind the engine compartment. My genius Captain is reconfiguring the electric wires so we can flick a switch the good ‘ol lazy way – by simply flicking. So of course, I let him think out loud for hours while I blissfully watch the sun set over the Long Island Sound, “12 volt light, 120 volt system, not quite right, whole in the wall, not quite right, green light off, boiler on, not quite right . . .”
With peace and a clear head he solves the problem. Now I can have a hot shower with the flick of a switch.
