Home Turf
Now we’re talk’n. Wind N NW, 12 knots with gusts to 18 knots, mostly sunny skies.
This is our home, so we know the Hudson River can be a challenge for sailors. First there’s a tide up to 3 knots, then there’s all the things that screw up the wind – the bridges, buildings, and palisades. Then there’s the narrowness of the river itself. Finally, there’s the traffic- ferries, barges, tankers, tugs, kayakers, paddle boarders, jet skis and more. However, today the odds were in our favor.
After we sailed three or four tacks for Grandma Polly’s photo shoot from the Brooklyn coastline, we finagled our way up the river against the current to Piermont on NW gusts. We only averaged about 5.5 knots SOG most of the way because of the current.
In Piermont we anchored in very shallow water (we love our centerboard) and used a lead line to calibrate our depth sounder which was off by almost two feet. Luckily it was reading shallower than the actual depth!
